Embracing Change, One Career Move at a Time
Amor fati (love of fate) has been on my mind lately because every career move I’ve made has started with fear and ended with gratitude, including my latest leap from Saatchi & Saatchi to Critical Mass.
Change is inevitable, but when it comes to our careers it can feel especially daunting. Whether it’s stepping out of university and into the workforce, moving from one role to another or navigating the uncertainty of job loss. Each shift brings both challenge and opportunity.
In my own career, I’ve felt that uncertainty many times; transitioning from university into my first job at OMD, moving from OMD to Saatchi & Saatchi, and now after six incredible years I’m stepping into a new role at Critical Mass.
With each move the early days felt like the scariest part, full of unknowns and questions about whether I’d made the right choice. But without fail, these have been the moments I look back on with the most gratitude. They’ve shaped my skills, expanded my network, and opened doors I never imagined at the time.
For me, amor fati means acceptance of what is. Instead of resisting or resenting change, embracing it fully and finding the good in it, even when the path forward is unclear.
The truth is change is rarely comfortable, yet it’s often the very thing that propels us further forward. Each career transition reshapes our skills, broadens our perspective, and adds a new chapter to our professional story.
Instead of fearing change, we can learn to view it as a catalyst. A closed door might lead us toward a role that better aligns with our values. A fresh start can spark creativity and new connections. Even setbacks can teach us resilience and sharpen our sense of direction. This echoes the similar effects of making mistakes, it’s the tough times that shape us more than the easy times. When we’re too comfortable it can be a sign of complacency and a lack of development.
Careers, like our lives, aren’t meant to be linear or easy. They’re a series of shifts, choices, and chances. The more we embrace the unknown and accept what we can’t change, the more open we will be to opportunities we never imagined.
